(유용한 영어표현) Both, either and neither 비교해서 사용하기

 

"Both", "either", and "neither" 모두 두 가지 이상의 선택 사항을 다룰 때

사용되는 단어들이지만, 각각의 사용법과 차이점이 있어요.

Both

 

두 가지 이상의 것들 중 모두를 가리킬 때 사용됩니다.

 

예시

"Both dogs are friendly."

"She can speak both French and German fluently."

"They both enjoyed the movie and the play.", 

 (그들 둘다, 주어뒤에 both로 둘다를 강조해주기도 합니다.)

"Both of my parents attended the graduation ceremony."

 

 

"Both"를 사용하여 두 가지 이상의 사항을 나열하고, "and"로 이어줍니다.

 

"She is both smart and funny."

"The cake is both delicious and beautifully decorated."

"They both enjoy hiking and cycling."

"The twins both have a keen interest in art."

"We decided to buy both the red and the blue shirt."

"She's both a talented singer and a skilled guitarist."

Either

1. 부정의 뜻을 강조!!  Use it to emphasize something negative.

The service at this restaurant was really bad.

The food wasn't good either.

(레스토랑 서비스 정말 안좋았어. 음식도 마찬가지로 좋지 않았어.)

She doesn't know how to use a smartphone.

A computer either.

 

우리가 긍정의 뜻을 다시 한번 강조할 때는 too를 많이 사용하는데요.

이처럼 부정문에서는 either를 사용해줍니다.

 

 

 

2. 두 가지 중에서 아무거나 하나를 선택할 때 사용합니다.

 

예시

 

"You can take either the red or the blue pen."

"Either movie is fine with me; I don’t have a preference."

(주어앞에 either을 붙여서 영화중 어느영화나...)

"You can either walk to the park or take the bus."

"You can take either the bus or the train to get to the city."

"Either option will lead to a successful outcome."

(주어앞에 either을 붙여서 영화중 어느옵션이...<모든옵션이 아닙니다.>)

 

 

"Either"를 사용하여 둘 중 하나를 선택할 때, "or"로 나열합니다.

둘 중 하나 무언가 선택해야하는 상황에 either를 앞에 넣고 두가지 대상 사이에 or을 넣으면 됩니다.

 

"You can either eat now or after the meeting."

"We can either go hiking or stay at home and watch a movie."

"She can speak either Spanish or Italian fluently."

"You can either start now or wait until tomorrow."

"You can either choose the salad or the soup as an appetizer."

Neither

 

두 가지 중 어느 하나도 아닌 경우를 나타냅니다.

 

예시

 

A: Do you want pasta or pizza?

B: Neither. I want curry.

 

"Neither option seems suitable for our needs."

(주어앞에 neither을 붙여서 부정의 뜻을 나타냅니다.)

"Neither of them was interested in going to the concert."

(=Both of them was not interested in....)

"They both decided that neither restaurant was appealing."

"Neither of the proposals met our expectations."

"Neither movie appealed to me, so I decided to read instead."

"They agreed that neither candidate was suitable for the position."

"Neither of them wants to go to the concert tonight."

"Neither option seems viable for our current situation."

 

"Neither... nor"는 둘 다 아닌 경우를 나타내는 구문으로,

두 가지 이상의 사항이 모두 아닌 상황을 설명할 때 사용됩니다.

 

"She speaks neither French nor German."

"Neither the black dress nor the red one suited the occasion."

"He could neither swim nor dive."

"They are neither happy nor satisfied with the outcome."

"The book is neither interesting nor well-written."
